Abraham Bisshop was born in Dordrecht in 1670 as the son of the Bol pupil, Cornelis Bisshop. On his early death, which prevented his appointment as court painter to the King of Denmark, Abraham continued to run his father’s workshop, subsequently making a name for himself as a painter of fantastical park landscapes, which he enlivened with indigenous and exotic birds. Characteristic of his high quality work, this painting depicts a golden pheasant and a robin, which Bisshop has placed carefully within the tableau employing his great skills for observation. Works comparable to this painting by Bisshop were auctioned at Christie’s, London on 18.4.1997 (lot 59) and on 26.1.2006 at Sotheby’s, New York (lot 131).
